Gestur Örn Ákason is a cheerful family man with a great passion for Formula 1. He was born in Reykjavík and raised in Kópavogur. Outside of work he draws energy from traveling, camping, and fishing.
If he had a free weekend on short notice, he would head straight out fishing with his camper in tow. His dream trip anywhere in the world would be to Japan, where he’d enjoy a delicious steak.
His career as a driving instructor began with his passion for driving, and he says that many moments – especially encouragement from his mother-in-law – pushed him into the profession. He has learned that he is more patient than he thought and that it’s incredibly rewarding to see students improve and pass their test.
Gestur says the best part of the job is meeting people and watching their progress behind the wheel. In his view, the most important qualities of a driving instructor are patience and the ability to see things from different perspectives.
He sees the future of driver training developing gradually – he believes changes in cars won’t happen as quickly as many think, and that students will still want to learn on manual cars. His advice for new instructors is simple: ‘Just have fun and try to put yourself in the student’s shoes.’
We at Ekill are proud to have Gestur on our team – an instructor who puts his heart and soul into making the student experience both enjoyable and professional.
Here you can listen to Gestur’s favorite song – you just might hear it blasting from his car with the windows down between lessons this summer. :)
